Three Gorges - Yangtze River, China

I made a month long journey to the Yangtze River area of China in 2002, during the middle stages of the construction of the largest dam in the world, before the gates were closed and water started backing up behind it. The dam is supposed to help control the downstream flooding of the Yangtze River and provide much needed hydroelectric power to the area.

My goal was to show the people and their lifestyle in small villages along the Yangtze River and its tributaries in the Three Gorges area, before the flooding changed their lives irrevocably. Much of the area I photographed in 2002 is now beneath the water.

All the images were made using medium format film and printed in my darkroom on Agfa Classic Fiber base paper with archival methods.
